MIDWIVES are in high demand at Tampa CENTER, a birth center in Florida. The center has been open for just over a year, and Director of Midwifery Services Shannon Nickerson says they could use more midwives.
“We’re seeing an increase in the number of people who are interested in home births and in using midwives as their primary care provider,” Nickerson said. “It’s definitely a labor of love.”
The center currently has four midwives on staff, but Nickerson would like to see that number grow to 10. She said the center is also looking for additional space to accommodate more births.
Tampa CENTER offers both home births and hospital births, with midwives serving as the primary care providers in both settings.
